Saturday is National Grief Awareness Day. It's import-ant to know that grief is not just the emotional response of feeling sad. Grief can affect your body, mind, and health in very serious ways.

Most people deal with grief without clinical intervention and slowly heal over time. But for some – particularly individuals experiencing a traumatic or sudden loss – grief can lead to significant health risks. Younger people or those already struggling can be even more at risk due prolonged exposure to grief.

A recent report from The New York Times indicated that individuals with high levels of persistent grief are 88% more likely to die within 10 years compared with those who are not suffering in this way. Grief can also coexist with depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance use or suicide.
