A jazz master played the sweet notes of "When the Saints Go Marching In" on his clarinet as city leaders followed in a procession at New Orleans' Hurricane Katrina memorial on Friday morning, the start of regionwide commemorations marking 20 years since the devastating storm .

The ceremony at the memorial, constructed to honor the dozens of unidentified victims of the 2005 hurricane, included prayer, thanks and recognition of the determination the city has shown in the years after the storm to rebuild.

Jazz clarinetist Michael White, whose vast collection of music history along with most everything else at his Gentilly home was lost in the flood , performed what he called a "toned-down" version of a jazz funeral and second line, beginning with "Amazing Grace" and ending with "Saints.
