NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — City of New Orleans officials and community leaders gathered Friday, Aug. 29, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with an annual wreath laying ceremony.
A memorial was erected in Mid City where 100 unclaimed and unidentified victims of the storm are buried.
The annual wreath laying tradition started at 8:29 a.m, in honor of the date Katrina changed the lives of New Orleans, Louisiana residnets.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell was there to discuss the recovery process the city is still undergoing 20 years after the storm.
"So while we can acknowledge the progress, we also can acknowledge we have ways to go. But you have to be thankful and it has to be rooted in gratitude in terms of how far we've come,"
Anyone wanting to pay their respects to
