Former RNC chairman Michael Steele disabused an MSNBC panel on Friday afternoon that there is any hope the Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) will have the courage to call for Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be fired or should step down from his post.
Cassidy, a medical doctor with a degree from LSU, was a key vote that helped Kennedy be confirmed despite his lack of medical knowledge and expertise, had said at the time that he would keep an eye on Kennedy and his actions.
Now that the HHS secretary has thrown the Centers of Disease Control into chaos with firings, which has been followed by resignations by high-ranking officials, there had been hope that Cassidy would flip on the department head.
Instead, Cassidy pledged more Senate oversight from his position as the chair of of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
Asked for his reaction, Steele, now an MSNBC host, did not hold back.
“There's there's there's not a Republican in the United States Senate who has done anything in the last ten years that would lead us to believe that in a moment like this, that they're going to stand up and say to the American people, ‘We side with you’,“ he told host Chris Jansing.
“Why are we pretending that Bill Cassidy is going to do something different than any other action he's taken up until now?” he exclaimed. “He voted for RFK Jr. in the face of RFK JR’s family, saying, ‘Please do not put this crazy man in this job.’”
“And he voted for him! He got a piece of paper saying what? He believed that crap? Come on!” he continued. “Why do we play this game? This is not –– we're expecting this man to do something that there is no evidence he's prepared to do? Because what he doesn't want the wrath of Donald Trump on his head. He doesn't want to be outside of the MAGAverse. His Senate seat is valued less than his support for Donald Trump. The people in his state, their health and their concerns is of less value to him, as it is for every senator who voted for this guy, who voted for RFK Jr.”
