BURAS, La. — At the Fort Jackson Museum and Welcome Center on Friday morning, survivors, leaders, and neighbors gathered in the very place where Hurricane Katrina made landfall 20 years ago — honoring the lives lost, remembering the devastation, and celebrating the resilience that has defined Plaquemines Parish ever since.

Parish President Keith Hinkley said the anniversary is about more than looking back.

“We continue to battle and fight for Plaquemines Parish — the residents that are here years past, they are here today,” Hinkley said.

Katrina made landfall near Buras on August 29, 2005. The storm sent a surge of more than 20 feet across the parish, overwhelming levees, wiping out entire fishing villages, and scattering families for months.
