A Mill Valley woman conquered one of the most challenging long-distance swims in the world and completely smashed the record on Tuesday.

Catherine Breed took off from the Farallon Islands late Monday night, swimming just over 30 miles and reaching the Golden Gate Bridge less than 14 hours later.

Breed finished with a time of 13 hours, 54 minutes and 10 seconds. Her time is still being certified by the official record.

That's just over 4 minutes shorter than the record set in 2014 by Joe Locke, another Mill Valley swimmer.

She is now just the seventh person and third woman to complete the swim in the frigid Pacific Ocean, battling with offshore currents and in the sites of hungry sharks.
