In a Friday speech commemorating the 20th anniversary of "Testament: The Little Rock Nine Monument" on the state Capitol grounds, Elizabeth Eckford – one of the "Little Rock Nine" -- stressed the importance of fully acknowledging the past and reflected on her legacy.
"I want to be remembered not as a brave person, but as one who just kept coming back to school in spite of knowing that it wasn't going to get better," Eckford said.
Situated on the north side of the Arkansas Capitol grounds, the monument "honors the courage of the nine African American students enrolled at Little Rock Central High School who began the process of desegregating the city's public schools in 1957," according to the U.S. Civil Rights Trail website . Built in 2005, it is the first civil rights monument on any sta
