DORR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Southbound US-131 reopened at 146th Avenue south of the Kent-Allegan county line Friday afternoon, making way for Labor Day weekend travel.
Some 6 miles of the southbound lanes — between 84th Street and 142nd Avenue — were shut down after a too-tall semi-truck load hit the 146th overpass Tuesday afternoon. That led to long backups on surface streets where traffic was detoured. With holiday travel looming, Michigan Department of Transportation crews were put to work to get the highway reopened by Friday afternoon.
MDOT spokesman John Richard previously told News 8 that the overpass, which was built in 1957 and has a 14-foot-2 clearance, took an especially hard hit.
“Sounds like this was some sort of makeshift concrete mobile unit on a flatbed truck,” he said
