KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Saturday, Tennessee will open the season against Syracuse for the first time since 1998. It’s a matchup dripping with nostalgia for any Vol fan.

For UT historian Bud Ford, both teams are dead ringers for their counterparts 27 years ago.

“I think there is a similarities in these two teams right now,” he said. “Both teams had good records, identical records last year. Tennessee was 10-and-three and so was Syracuse. But both teams have lost their starting quarterback, they’ve lost some running backs, so it’s going to be interesting to see how it plays out.”

It will be a true test for this as-yet untested Tennessee team. Vol fans might hope it ends the same way it did in 1998.
