This is the Labour Day long weekend, where most of us get an extra day off on Monday. Labour Day originated from the labour movement’s fight for workers’ rights, with Canada’s 1872 printers’ strike and march for a nine-hour day serving as a key catalyst. It became a holiday as far back as the 1880s in both Canada and the United States.

The holiday serves to honour the contributions of workers to society and the achievements of the labour movement and is celebrated on the first Monday of September.
