A disc golf course expansion cut into a coyote den at Forsythe Park in Hammond earlier this week, stirring controversy on social media.

A volunteer working after hours to expand the 18-hole disc golf course to 21 holes cut a path through shrubbery where coyotes have been known to congregate, Hammond Port Authority Director Jeff Smith said.

The person did so without the city's knowledge or permission, and the city shut down the work after discovering it was encroaching on the brush, Smith said.

Laurenza Carano, who walks through the park every day, came across the worker earlier this week, asked if he had a permit and ended up calling the police.

She said he was cutting down trees in the middle of the coyote den at the park on Wolf Lake in Hammond's Robertsdale neighborh
