Downtown Vancouver businesses and residents celebrated a construction milestone Thursday with the reopening of the first block renovated as part of the city’s Main Street Promise project.

“Main Street is the heart of our downtown,” Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle said in a news release, “and we’re delivering on our promise to build a destination that’s vibrant, accessible and economically strong.”

The city broke ground on the construction project in January. The project is completely revamping 10 Main Street blocks between Fifth and 15th streets by replacing sidewalks, as well as underground water and sewer lines; redesigning the street with pedestrian and bicyclist safety in mind; improving traffic signals; installing speed humps to slow traffic; and adding festive lighting and n
