Santa Cruz’s John Mel, Adam Bartlett and Kaikora Nauenberg each advanced from one heat, but were eliminated from the World Surf League’s WRV Outer Banks Pro, a Qualifying Series 2,000-point event at Nags Head, North Carolina.

Mel tied for 25th place and earned 266 points

Mel posted a two-wave score of 8.40 to take second to Mexico’s Jhony Corzo (12.50) in Heat 12 of the Round of 64 on Friday to advance, but he placed fourth in Heat 5 of the Round of 32 on Saturday with a 9.15 total. Cannon Carr (13.70) and Bo Raynor (11.30) advanced from the 20-minute heat, held 1- to 4-foot waves.

Bartlett tied for 49th place overall and earned 120 points. Bartlett took first in Heat 14 of the Round of 96 with a 11.40 total, but placed fourth with a 9.00 total in Heat 14 in the Round of 64 and was elim
