Loyalist College’s plan to lay off 36 faculty is “union busting,” its faculty union charges, adding increases in administrative roles and capital spending have contributed to the school’s financial crisis.

The college on Aug. 19 informed the president of Local 420 of the Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union, or OPSEU, and the college’s employment stability committee that 36 faculty positions would be affected by its suspension earlier this year of 24 programs and resulting staffing cuts.

Local 420 represents faculty, while Local 421 is comprised of support staff.

“The priorities of this college have shifted away from quality educational experiences for our students and towards other hidden agendas,” reads a union statement provided to The Intelligencer.
