MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (KFVS) - The Jackson County Health Department confirms that the West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Jackson County in 2025.

The mosquitoes were collected during routine testing near Murphysboro.

West Nile virus is transmitted through mosquito bites.

One out of five people bitten by a mosquito will experience symptoms.

West Nile virus symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and body aches within 3 to 14 days of the bite. In rare cases, the disease can be deadly.

West Nile virus has been found in mosquitoes in other southern Illinois counties in 2025 . Only one case of West Nile virus has been detected in a person in the Heartland in 2025.

As with other mosquito-borne illnesses, prevention is key to avoiding West Nile virus.
