Democratic lawmakers are mobilizing against gun violence following the mass shooting Wednesday at a Catholic church and school in Minneapolis.

Gov. Tim Walz is considering a special session on gun legislation, likely sometime after mid-September. A senior administration official told reporters that the governor is calling lawmakers to see what action could be taken before the 2026 legislative session begins in February.

The shooting Wednesday morning at Annunciation Church and School killed Fletcher Merkel, 8, and Harper Moyski, 10, and injured 18 other people, including 15 children. The shooter, 23-year-old Robin Westman, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene, according to police.

"It’s time to take serious action at the State Capitol to address gun violence," Walz posted
