CLEVELAND, Ohio - A fire broke out early Friday morning at the former Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood, where an extensive redevelopment project was underway.

Cleveland firefighters responded to the vacant school building in the 1600 block of East 71st Street, near Hough Avenue, about 7 a.m. Fire officials reported that the blaze was contained to a hallway and staircase area near the gymnasium.

No firefighters were injured during the response. Officials did not provide an estimated amount of damage from the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and it’s unclear whether the incident will impact construction plans for the site.
