LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. (SNN) — Longboat Key’s main roadway has been known as Gulf of Mexico Drive since 1957. But state crews recently removed the signs — raising questions about whether the name will remain.

The Florida Department of Transportation took down six signs this week under a new state law that directs agencies to update maps, materials, and signage to reflect the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

Assistant Town Manager Isaac Brownman says the town is hearing mixed opinions from residents.

“Some people are for it, some are indifferent, and some are against it.”

The road is officially listed by the state as State Road 789, while the town commission adopted the name Gulf of Mexico Drive decades ago. That means even if the commission votes to keep the local nam
