AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The Austin Police Department said it is aware of a "planned illegal street takeover event" and wants to warn drivers ahead of the event that is scheduled to happen Friday night.

Takeovers are also referred to as "sideshows," which involve blocking off intersections and speeding or showing off stunts -- like drifting, donuts and ghost riding, KXAN reported in 2023. In ghost riding, a driver jumps out of a moving car to dance or perform near or on it before jumping back in.

Street takeovers happened in Austin in 2023, where drivers did donuts at intersections and came dangerously close to other drivers nearby.

APD said it does not have a specific location or details to share on the event, titled "ATX VS APD PT3," and said it "will not tolerate reckless driving or illegal
