House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was hit with an immediate fact check as he defended President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” on air.
During an appearance on CNN, Johnson was asked about Trump saying he wants to rebrand the GOP’s signature budget legislation, which was signed into law last month, after he persuaded Republicans to reference it as such.
“In a landmark achievement, I also proudly signed the largest working-class tax cuts in American history. So the bill that — I’m not going to use the term ‘great, big, beautiful’ — that was good for getting it approved, but it’s not good for explaining to people what it’s all about,” Trump said during his Cabinet meeting earlier this week.
