Almost as soon as it began, a recreation closure on the last stretch of the Blackfoot River has been lifted. But another closure is now in the works to begin at the height of next year's floating season.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks announced Friday afternoon that the section between the Weigh Station fishing access and the confluence with the Clark Fork River has been reopened. BNSF previously requested the closure to keep would-be floaters safe while it completes maintenance work on the railroad bridge spanning that section.
But the rail company decided against starting work this year, and chose to delay it until next season "after a closer look at the project requirements and timeline," according to FWP spokesperson Vivaca Crowser.
