NORTH ROYALTON, Ohio — When news of the Minneapolis school shooting broke, Principal Edward Vittardi of Saint Albert the Great School knew he had to act quickly to reassure his school community.

"I think every single day, that when our parents drop their children off to school, above all else, they want to know that they're safe," Vittardi said. "And anything that we can do to comfort them and feel comfortable about the fact that their kids are as safe as they possibly can be, that reassurance is really important to me."

Within hours of the Minneapolis tragedy, Vittardi posted a detailed message to parents on Facebook , outlining the school's enhanced safety measures.

For Vittardi, the school's approach to safety stems from a deeper philosophy about community.
