MONROE, La. (KNOE) - August marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina, and state officials speak about where we are today.
When Hurricane Katrina struck in August of 2005, the disaster didn’t end with the storm. When the levees broke, nearly 80 percent of New Orleans was flooded, leaving some people submerged in 10 feet of water.
The Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness officials (GOHSEP) say three key factors in Katrina’s destruction were evacuation, communication and resources.
GOHSEP was put in place in 2006 after the devastation. Now, those leaders say Louisiana is better equipped.
