The other side of the now-famous phone call between Jonah Tong and his mother, Karen, began with her assuming Jonah had to talk about school.

The night prior, they had been on the phone going over his coursework for the semester at Northeastern, so when the phone rang again, this time at 11:15 p.m., she assumed it was about that.

She’d shut down her social media, so if the news of her son’s call-up to the Mets had leaked by then, it had escaped notice.

Tong, as the world now knows, started bawling upon telling her the news that he would be making his Mets debut Friday night against the Marlins.
