Former vice-president Al Gore joined rapper, educator and cookbook author Mia “Mia X” Young at the Industrial Canal wall in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward on Friday to mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

Nearly two dozen speakers commemorated what was lost, celebrated what’s been recovered and excoriated those who are to blame.

Then the speeches gave way to a second-line and street festival.

The rupturing of the Industrial Canal wall on the morning of Aug. 29, 2005 unleashed a destructive torrent that demolished houses, overturned cars and killed scores of Lower Ninth Ward residents. The repaired section of the wall along Jourdan Avenue is now decorated with a mural by students from the nonprofit Eternal Seeds, a program of visual artist Brandan “BMike” Odums and his StudioBE
