ATLANTA — Georgia State Patrol (GSP) said a trooper walked away unharmed after a pursuit ended in a fiery crash on Friday afternoon.
According to GSP, troopers attempted a traffic stop after observing a white BMW SUV speeding on Lee Street near Georgia 166. The BMW slowed at first but then began accelerating, and a pursuit ensued, officials said. It continued onto Georgia 166 East onto Cleveland Avenue and Forrest Hills Drive.
GSP officials said troopers attempted to end the pursuit by striking the BMW as they turned onto Grand Avenue, but the vehicle continued.
As the driver of the BMW turned onto Old Jonesboro Road, the trooper tried to follow but ran off the road, hitting a fence and a tree, GSP officials said. Following the crash, GSP said the patrol car burst into flames.
