Family, friends honor Lancaster High School football player who died after practice

Family and friends are remembering a student athlete who died after practice last week.

Preston Malone III was a student at Lancaster Early College High School.

He was a sophomore on the JV football team and the son of Antanette and Preston Malone II.

“He was a great kid, an awesome kid and we are very proud parents,” said Antanette Malone.

During practice last Monday, Lancaster ISD says Preston told a coach he wasn’t feeling well, so trainers implemented UIL heat safety protocols and procedures.

After showing improvement, the district says Preston was taken to Children’s Medical Center, where relatives like Preston’s grandmother, Lisa Wynn, gathered.

“I told him I loved him and he said he loved me,” said Wynn.
