PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Friday marked 20 years since Hurricane Katrina made landfall and caused devastation along the Gulf Coast.

Hurricane Katrina was also the catalyst for the creation of Portsmouth-based non-profit Mercy Chefs.

Seeing the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina caused the founder of Mercy Chefs, Gary LeBlanc, to take action and volunteer for the first time. LeBlanc told 10 On Your Side he knew he had to do something because it was his hometown on the screen.

"Seeing people I knew standing on those bridges that had just had to swim for their lives.
