A family is mourning a mother from D.C. killed in a crash in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Tuesday when a stolen car that police say was driven by a teenager struck the car in which the mother and her son were riding.

Four teens were inside the stolen the car when it ran a red light and struck Shauntae Canty’s car, police said.

The crash happened after Seat Pleasant police began following the stolen car from a distance, investigators said.

“At no time did they engage in a pursuit,” a police spokesman said Tuesday. “Shortly after that, they were told to stop following at which time they did, and then shortly after that, an accident occurred.”
