TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - Some Arizonans may face higher healthcare costs as the state warns of potential premium increases for those covered under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions has issued this alert.

Insurers for ACA plans have submitted initial rate increases. The largest proposed rate increase for an Arizona plan exceeded 55%, while the lowest was roughly 2.5%.

These proposed rates would affect the insurance premiums that people covered under ACA plans have to pay.

The department attributes the potential rate hikes to rising basic medical care costs, such as prescription drugs, and the expiration of federal tax credits this year that help pay premiums.

The state encourages consumers to explore their options on HealthCare.
