SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Sacramento's waterways are expected to attract large crowds this Labor Day weekend and officials are reminding visitors to prioritize safety during the unofficial last days of summer.

"Make sure that you're renting an appropriate style of raft from one of our local rental companies. Make sure you have your life vest, bring plenty of sunscreen and lots of water,” Mark Nunez with Sacramento Metro Fire said.

Nunez said rafts from local raft companies are generally better suited for the conditions on the American River.

“They have rafts that are actually designed for the American River. The ones that you see that you use for your backyards, they're not really designed for this type of water. They can very easily get punctured,” he said. “The next thing you know, you've
