The Council House in Old Market Square, Nottingham city centre

An unmistakable sound of Nottingham city centre will soon fall silent as repairs are made to the bell housed inside the city's Council House . The prominent Old Market Square landmark's nearly 100-year-old chiming clock, which is nicknamed Little John , will be noticeably quiet as a 10-week-long restoration is carried out this autumn.

Nottingham City Council has said this will include a full inspection and servicing of the clock’s mechanism, hour strike, and bells, alongside future-proofing essential components and restoring the clockface’s centre cross with traditional 23.75ct gold leaf. The repair works are due to start on September 1 and are expected to be completed by November 7.
