ON THIS DAY IN 1886 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “A delegate from the watch case makers presided yesterday at the meeting of the Central Labor Union, at the Labor Lyceum, Myrtle street. The Committee on Parade reported that they had a list of thirty-six associations that would turn out on Labor day.”

ON THIS DAY IN 1889 , the Eagle said, “Lawn tennis is perhaps very much of a woman’s game as compared with base ball or cricket, but it has become extremely popular, particularly in this city and vicinity. It is a Brooklyn youth, Henry W. Slocum, Jr., who has just won for a second time the championship of the United States, having defeated Mr. Q.A.
