Adapted from an online discussion.

Dear Carolyn: I have been dating a man for a few years who believes it is not masculine to show emotions. Lately he has been telling me I am too emotional and moody. I now find myself avoiding seeing him when I am feeling anything other than happy and calm because I do not want to be judged.

How do I figure out if I am actually too emotional about things or if he is having a bad influence on my mental well-being? — Too Emotional

Too Emotional: Break up with him and feel the joy of being yourself without a panel of judges ready to ding you for it?

I'm not saying we're all perfect as-is, you or anyone else.

But being loved as-is for who you are, and given leeway, is a valid baseline to set for being in a relationship with someone.
