MOBILE, Ala. ( WALA ) - Ginger Woechan is a familiar face in Mobile. She’s an artist. She even painted FOX10’s Mardi Gras float.

She lived on the Mississippi Gulf Coast when Katrina demolished her family home in Ocean Springs. The hurt for her, she said, is almost as strong as it was two decades ago.

When Hurricane Katrina hit, Woechan was a college student at LSU in Baton Rouge. Her family had evacuated their home in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

Woechan said, “The week after especially was there hardest. There were people who left New Orleans to go to Baton Rouge. It was mass confusion and chaos in Baton Rouge.”

Because phone lines were down, Woechan wasn’t able to reach her parents for two weeks.
