RICHMOND, Va. — A specially trained Labrador named Vader has joined the Virginia State Police to help support officers’ mental health through the department’s Critical Incident Stress Management program.
Vader’s role is to reduce stress and anxiety, particularly after traumatic incidents, and to help officers build resilience. Studies show police experience higher rates of trauma exposure than the general population, highlighting the importance of wellness initiatives.
The dog was donated by Mutts With A Mission , a Virginia Beach-based nonprofit accredited by Assistance Dogs International. The organization trains facility and service dogs to assist veterans, first responders, and wounded warriors.
Vader has completed extensive training, including the ADI Public Access Test and Skills
