A Vancouver Island wildlife group is warning the public to keep its distance from seal pups after observing “concerning behaviour” recently in the Sooke Basin.

With summer activities in full form on the Island, the Wild Wise Society says self-propelled boaters have been getting too close to seal pups.

The group posted online stating “Over the last few weeks, volunteers have noticed concerning behaviour in the Sooke Basin, kayakers and paddle boarders approaching seals at very close range to take cell phone photos.”

It adds, “This is not respectful, and it can cause unnecessary stress.”

In July, the Society sent a warning to the public after an incident involving harbour seal pups in Victoria. The Society says this has been happening more this year.
