With The Great Train Robbery in 1903, the modern action genre was born. The genre, of course, continued to grow, with pioneers like Akira Kurosawa, Sergio Leone, and Sam Peckinpah each adding their own respective evolution to action cinema, whether it be large-scale conflicts, stylized gunfights, or slow motion to highlight moments of brutality. While these directors laid the groundwork for modern cinema, others continue to push the genre forward in new and exciting ways.
