Tulane’s fiery head coach knows how to create a controversy when given the opportunity.

Maybe Northwestern’s reason to deny Tulane’s request to wear white jerseys in honor of the 20-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina was as innocent one, rooted in a simple, rational desire to wear white in the unrelenting Louisiana sun. But to Sumrall, it was righteous affront, worthy of indignation, and he used the “controversy” to his advantage.

“Jersey-gate” will be what most people remember about Tulane’s 23-3 victory over Northwestern on Saturday. And Sumrall’s emotional reaction to the perceived disrespect made great copy for reporters at the postgame press conference.
