TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) - The August "Clear the Shelters" event ended Saturday evening at shelters across Hillsborough County. The initiative, sponsored by WFLA and NBCUniversal, is in its 11th year, and works to increase funding for animal care facilities and inspire the community to adopt pets from shelters.
"So at the beginning of August, we were right around 125% capacity for dogs. Right now we're well over about 200% capacity. So we have about 270 dogs right now on site. So for us that is a lot of animals to take care of," said Chelsea Waldeck, with the Pet Resource Center of Hillsborough County.
Nationally, the campaign works across more than 1,600 shelters and rescues representing 49 states. Since beginning in 2015, more than 1.2 million pets have been adopted, and more than $5 million
