St. Louis City SC is 2-0 in games immediately after it fired its head coach, but it’s 0-1 when it fires the sporting director.

City SC didn’t have much to show until very late in a 3-2 loss to Houston on Saturday night at Energizer Park that moved it one game closer to official elimination and didn’t move it any further away from the bottom of the league standings.

Five days after firing Lutz Pfannenstiel, City SC seemed headed for its 11th shutout of the season, before Eduard Lowen scored in the 86th minute and Mykhi Joyner scored in the 89th to excite what was left of the crowd. For an instant, it looked like City SC might pull out a miracle tie when Klauss had a header in the 93rd minute that Houston goalkeeper Jonathan Bond made a lunging save on to protect the win.
