Essex County officials recently unveiled major improvements to the Rev. Ron Christian Athletic Complex in Newark’s Weequahic Park this week.
The $1.58 million project includes new playing surfaces and marks the first renovation of its football and soccer field and rubberized running track since 2016. New playing surfaces were installed.
The upgrades were funded through a $1 million grant from the state Division of Community Affairs and $577,400 from the Essex County Recreation and Open Space Trust Fund.
“The upgrades we made will ensure the field and track are able to meet the needs of athletes of all ages,” Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. said in a statement.
