David Brooks’ call for disrupting the caste system (“Reforms need to overcome the new segregation” Las Vegas Sun, Aug. 22) will be even more difficult after the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill that enriched the already rich on the backs of the poor.

We can resist that bill by asking our members of Congress to pass legislation that reforms the power of the tax system to lift people out of poverty.

The Child Tax Credit is a good way to do just that — making sure it reaches those who need it most, fully refundable monthly. Making sure the SNAP program that was slashed is instead fully funded and puts an end to hunger in America is another critical step. A third need is to fix health care so that instead of millions losing their coverage, everyone is covered.
