ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — The last weekend in August called for Altoona residents to line the sidewalks of 11th Ave. and 12th Ave. for the annual Labor Day Parade.

Nearly 25 different unions, groups and bands showcased their pride and sound throughout the downtown landscape. Unions, ranging from ironworkers, steelworkers and carpenters, lofted pieces of candy onto the sidewalks in celebration of the holiday.

"This is our day," Sue McCormick, a member of AFSCME, said. "This is not just a day off. This is a day to celebrate labor in the United States that has made this country strong."

"It just means freedom," spectator Ralph Cornelius said. "It means respect for the people. In this town, it just means to be kind to one another. It's a very important part of our nation and everything."
