“Sunset Boulevard,” a caustic, witty look at the dark side of Hollywood, was released 75 years ago this month — Aug. 10, 1950 — and the milestone is prompting new rounds of media chin-stroking.

Fine, but out our way, “Sunset Boulevard,” about a fading silent screen star and a down-on-his-luck screenwriter found dead in her swimming pool, is revered for purely local reasons.

That’s because it has what might be the best-ever line of Inland Empire movie dialogue. Let me set it up.

In her decaying mansion, Norma Desmond, the reclusive star played by Gloria Swanson, is talking to Joe Gillis, William Holden’s screenwriter character. She has an unlikely concept for her comeback vehicle: the biblical story of Salome.
