A man was wounded Sunday morning during an exchange of gunfire with police in the Jefferson Park community of South Los Angeles, authorities said.

Officers in the area of Jefferson Boulevard and 9th Avenue about 1:10 a.m. encountered a suspect armed with a firearm, reported the Los Angeles Police Department.

“There was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and officers,” according to a police statement. “The suspect was struck but able to flee on foot.”

The suspect was taken into custody about two blocks away on 7th Avenue by a responding police unit. He was taken to a hospital, where he had stable vital signs.

No officers were injured and the suspect’s firearm was recovered at the scene.
