After returning an interception 20 yards for a touchdown that kick-started Maryland football’s 39-7 clobbering of Florida Atlantic in Saturday’s season opener at SECU Stadium in College Park, Daniel Wingate had to pause when asked to recall the last time he reached the end zone.
“Might have been my peewee days,” the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Pallotti graduate said. “It’s been a while since I scored a touchdown, but it felt great to get it back.”
As much attention fell on freshman quarterback Malik Washington for his 258-yard, three-touchdown showing , Wingate deserved a turn in the spotlight for his play that gave the Terps a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. The linebacker’s score helped anchor a defense reeling from penalties and settle an offense struggling to find its footing.
