DENVER -- Mickey Moniak walked off the Cubs on Sunday afternoon with a game-winning triple in the ninth inning as the Rockies avoided a season sweep with a 6-5 victory at Coors Field.
Moniak brought home Ryan Ritter with the Rockies' first walk-off triple since June 7, 2014, when Brandon Barnes drove in Justin Morneau to upend the Dodgers. But that's only one part of the rarity of the moment.
There have been only two walk-off triples in the Majors this year -- Moniak's and one by Jesús Sánchez of Miami on May 19. Both were against Cubs reliever Daniel Palencia. He's the only pitcher to allow two walk-off triples in the same season since 1969, when complete play-by-play data became available.
