One person died and three others were injured when two small planes collided midair while landing at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport in Colorado on Sunday morning. The incident involved a Cessna 172 and an Extra EA-300, each carrying two people. The Federal Aviation Administration reported that both planes were attempting to land simultaneously when they struck each other around 10:44 a.m. local time.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that one occupant of the Extra EA-300 was pronounced dead at the scene. The survivor from that plane was taken to a local hospital, but their condition remains unclear. The two individuals aboard the Cessna 172 suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Following the collision, one of the planes caught fire, although officials did not specify which one. Aerial footage showed the wreckage, with one aircraft reduced to charred debris and the other left with only a tail, a wing, and a single tire intact.

Witnesses reported that bystanders rushed to help as smoke billowed from the wreckage. Some attempted to extinguish the flames before emergency responders arrived. The sheriff’s office expressed condolences to the victim's family and thanked those who assisted at the scene.

At the time of the crash, a collegiate aerobatics team from Metropolitan State University of Denver was competing at the airport. University officials stated that the crash was unrelated to the competition and extended their sympathies to those affected.

An investigation into the incident will be conducted by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board, with investigators expected to arrive at the scene on Monday. A preliminary report detailing the probable cause of the crash is anticipated within a month.
