CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Two officers at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections were given Narcan after they were exposed to a substance believed to be fentanyl on Sunday morning, according to Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers President Richard Ferruccio.

Officers smelled an odor in a cell around 10 a.m., and began to feel “dizzy and incoherent” while investigating the cell, Ferruccio said.

Medical personnel used Narcan on the two officers, who were then taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

Ferruccio said the contraband is unknown and will be tested, but officials believe the substance is fentanyl since the Narcan worked on the officers.

The two officers have since been released from the hospital.
